McCall, Idaho to Clarkston, Washington

We were on the road this morning and checked out Payette Lake and then continued on to the northern and less populated section. Eventualy, we ran out of paved road and had to turn around and go back 30 miles to town- but it was a beautiful 30 miles! Our trip continued on Rt. 55 to Rt. 95 to Clarkston, Washington. Our friends, Roger and Diane live here and we'll be staying with them for a few days and then we will all head to Yellowstone NP on Sunday. We stopped for lunch at the River Rock Cafe in Riggins, Idaho- a cute little restaurant on the Salmon River.

Most of these are taken in the Payette National Forest and looking at Payette Lake. Notice all of the trees!

Now we are leaving the National Forest area and heading north on Rt.95 through some amazing canyons carved by the Salmon River- great views but all of a sudden most of the trees are gone.

Great lunch stop in Riggins, Idaho.
Still following the Salmon River-
Below is the White Bird Battlefield -see below for an explanation.
More of the battlefield-
There are historic sites all along this stretch- we stopped at this one. Interesting battle between greedy white men and the Nez Perce Indians- the Indians won this one on the White Bird Batttlefield.

Another plaque explains that a treaty had been made, but when white men found gold in the territory "given" to the Nez Perce, they wanted it back and went to battle over it. They were eventually settled on a small reservation north of here on a much smaller tract than originally agreed upon. So much of our history with Native Americans is so disturbing...

Tomorrow we are taking a boat tour of Hells Canyon with Roger and Diane. It should be lots of fun! Apparently it is not a cruising boat but a power boat!!
